Two towering, powerful icons emerge from the sprawling
mass: the volcanic cone of Rangitoto, and the futuristic Sky Tower. They
may also define its soul; a city of tranquility and sophistication, that
combines a stunning coastline, with cultural edge. The hecklers claim
Auckland is bold, brash and full of excess. The critics may be right
about the excess, but theres no stopping Aucklands growth, as it
steadily consumes new ground. (more)
Long long ago, Maui, a mischievous demigod, went fishing
one day with his brothers deep in the southern ocean. Using his
grandmothers jawbone for a hook, he caught a huge fish and hauled it out
of the sea. His brothers were jealous and fought over the fish for tasty
pieces. The fish became the North Island of New Zealand, and the
landforms were created by their actions, the sea flowing into the gaps
left by the hungry brothers. (more)
The citys international events over the last year have
seen a phenomenal growth in new eateries in the city. Add this to an
already abundant and well-established restaurant scene in Auckland, and
you have perhaps the finest dining experience in the Pacific Rim. (more)

urban sophistication you might expect in a much bigger city, Auckland is
a great place to spend time. Whether your idea of heaven is champagne
and harbour views, going hard with an international DJ, or downing
espresso in a bustling city café, the City of Sails has it covered.

Auckland begs to be explored. In Auckland itself are
volcanoes, beaches, historic buildings, open air markets, shops, cafes
and all the amenities of modern urban life. Within an hours drive of
downtown there are wild beaches, pristine sub-tropical rainforests,
thermal pools and vineyards. Exploring on foot or bike The best way to
see Auckland up close is by foot or bike. Auckland is linked by a
network of council-maintained walkways and bike paths. Two of the best
tours are the Coast-to-Coast Walkway, which crosses the isthmus from the
Auckland waterfront to Onehunga and the 50 kilometre Bike Ride which
circles the city. (more)
