Blood Supply/Transfusion in Ireland
The Blood Transfusion Board in Dublin and Cork, who are Institutional Members
of the American Association of Bloodbanks, supply all of Southern Ireland with
blood, apart from the Midwestern Health Board area. Routine screening is
performed on all blood donated.
The Midwestern Health Board, which consists of Clare, Limerick and West
Tipperary County, is supplied by a private blood bank. The private blood bank is
legally bound to perform the same screening as the Blood Transfusion Board in
Dublin and Cork.
For AIDS tests, a local G.P. (General Practitioner) can take blood samples,
which are then forwarded to a hospital for testing. Hospitals with a STD clinic
may also be contacted directly.

OBTAINING MEDICATION
Before leaving the United States:
Persons who need to bring medication into Ireland should ensure that they
bring sufficient quantities of the medication, together with a letter from their
U.S. physician stating that the medication is necessary and is for the patient's
own use, together with a copy of the prescription, to avoid being questioned by
either U.S. or Irish customs.
Persons already in Ireland who require U.S. medication:
Such persons should first check with their local pharmacy and learn whether
their medication is already available in Ireland under a European brand name. If
the medication is available, the person should then attend a local general
practioner, who can prescribe on their behalf.
If the medication is not available in Ireland:
The patient's U.S. physician should forward to the patient a prescription for
the drug, together with a letter from the doctor stating that the patient
requires this drug to treat an illness (please specify the illness), and stating
that the drug is for the patient's use only. The physician or pharmacist in the
U.S. can then mail the drugs to the recipient. The letter from the doctor and
the prescription should be retained to be presented to local customs.
Pharmacies (Chemists) and Medication:
Some Pharmacies remain open after normal business hours, and many provide a
limited service on Sunday's and Bank Holidays. Should you need to fill a
prescription after business hours, your local Police (Garda) station can provide
you with a list of pharmacies who provide late opening or emergency services in
your neighbourhood.
If there is a medication which you use on a regular basis, bring it along to
your local General Practioner or Pharmacist who can help you identify an
equivalent local brand.
